Markets have been an important characteristic of human civilization for centuries. However, each generation has expanded the power to exchange by increasing outreach across time and space with the adaptation to new technologies brought about by the development of highways, railroads, telephones, and computer networks2. Each new work practice brings with it new wealth and new means of commerce that serve to shrink the segments of the world economy until it ultimately becomes a global marketplace. (This is exemplified by the fact that business can be transacted anywhere on Earth in relatively short timeframes.)
